Holiday sickness outbreak at Rhodes hotel

Sixty Britons are reported to have been rushed to hospital after a bug swept through the luxury Greek hotel. At one stage, 12 ambulances were said to have been lined up outside the 5-star Holiday Village in Kolymbia, Rhodes. Victims of the bug, reported to be Cryptosporidium, suffered symptoms of diarrhoea, dizziness and stomach cramps.

The illness  outbreak was thought to be so serious, that the hotel had to call in additional medical staff to deal with the situation, and to help the large number of holidaymakers who were falling ill by the hour.

Holidaymakers staying at the hotel reported that only one side of the resort seemed to be affected by the sickness bug, which suggests the bug may have been bacterial. A viral bug would have been more likely to affect the whole hotel.

First Choice, the tour operator of The Rhodes Holiday Village apparently told holidaymakers that the illness was caused by an airborne virus, and it has been reported that independent hygiene specialists have now inspected the hotel to try and discover the cause of the outbreak. One source claims the hotel water supply was contaminated by sewage.
